Bajaj Chetak set to unveil budget-friendly variant in May.

Bajaj Chetak

The next iteration of Chetak might opt for its most compact battery to date, potentially paired with a motor mounted within the hub.

Bajaj Auto wants more people to use electric scooters, even though the government is giving less money to help. They’re going to make cheaper electric scooters that more people can afford, and they’ll sell them under the Chetak brand. A new scooter will come out in May, and Bajaj Auto aims to open three times as many stores where you can buy their scooters in the next few months.

Highlights

  1. The new Chetak model might be the most basic version in the lineup.
  2. Right now, there are two options available for purchase: Premium and Urbane.
  3. Chetak stores will get bigger all across India.

Bajaj Auto executive director Rakesh Sharma said to the reporters in a post-earnings call. “The product upgrade in the fourth quarter was very well accepted. We’ll be launching a new product by upcoming month of May,”.

Bajaj Auto sells electric scooters under the Chetak brand. Right now, they have two types: the Chetak Urbane and the Chetak Premium. The Premium starts at Rs 1.47 lakh and the Urbane starts at Rs 1.23 lakh.

Telling about the new product’s price, Sharma added: “With the new model hope to attack the mass segment. I cannot share the price, but it’s not going to be a premium offering.” He noted that it would be a “more mass-appeal” product. The new version of the scooter will probably have a smaller battery and a special type of motor called a hub motor. Last year, people saw a Bajaj Chetak scooter being tested with this type of motor attached to the wheel, so it’s possible that the new model they’re talking about is the same one they saw testing before.

Bajaj Auto started selling electric scooters in January 2020. In the last financial year, they sold 1,06,431 Chetak e-scooters, and now they have 14 percent of the market share. You can buy the Bajaj Chetak in 164 cities across India from about 200 shops. Bajaj Auto wants to increase the number of shops to about 600 in the next three to four months.
